Hallowednesday
Happy Halloween from all of us here at jordanrippy.com! I’m looking forward to my first Halloween living in a house. Why? Because this is the first year that I’ll experience being on the other side of trick or treating. My current plan is to get a really scary mask and let Kristin answer the door and start passing out candy while I sneak up the side yard, behind the kids, and then scream. It will be fun to see them run away in sheer terror. I may even chase them for a couple of blocks, just to add that extra sense of Halloween terror. I was going to take some pictures of the whole ordeal for the blog, but I don’t want to be remembered as the guy who takes pictures of all the neighborhood kids when they come trick or treating. In honor of Halloween, here’s a list of the top 13 scariest movies of all time:
- The Shining (1980)
- The Exorcist (1973)
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Jaws (1975)
- Halloween (1978)
- Psycho (1960)
- Seven (1995)
- Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
- Poltergeist (1982)
- A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
- The Thing (1982)
- The Evil Dead (1982)
You can check out the rest of the list here. Every Halloween weekend, Chris and I go see the latest installment of “Saw”. What are your favorite scary movies or Halloween traditions?

Jordan,
If you are into scary movies at all, I really recommend you check out some of the classic ones as well.
Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula from the 1930’s. It was when mood and suspense set the tone. It was not just “Let’s ’scare’ people by grossing them out.” Also, check out the original “The Haunting” from 1963. Oddly enough, it’s the same guy who directed Sound of Music. They never show ANYTHING in there. It is just the mood, music, sounds that creep you out.
Then there are the Hitchcock movies. Seen Psycho? If not, you should. Rear Window? Rebecca? Go rent them. Now. That man knew how to make a movie. As to your “13″ list - The Shining, Silence of the Lambs, Jaws, Seven, Halloween and Poltergeist are all good. Poltergeist was one the Spielberg “kind of” directed. It’s really good. Silence of the Lambs is good, but overrated to me. The rest…I’m not really into monster or gross-out ones. I like more of the supsense/scary type.
Oh well, that’s my way to long comment about movies.
Tonight: We’ll be taking the kids up to the mandatory “festival” at the church…then taking them around Sturbridge for some candy-gathering goodness. Then, we’ll probably watch “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

By the way, that EW list is terrible. Sorry. It is.
PS - Jaws is one of the best movies. Ever.

The top 13 list from EW is ok. Not terrible. I would say that the first 5 are good, but then it needs some work from there. I’ve seen most of the movies you listed…I’m a big fan of The Ring and Seven. I think they’re both well written and extremely suspenseful.

This is a little different, but you should check out “The ‘Burbs” with Tom Hanks. It is one of my all-time favorites. It’s not really a horror movie…more of a dark comedy kind of thing. Tom Hanks and his friends become convinced their new neighbors are killers and all that. I love it. It is also a family-friendly PG.
Seven is great for sure. The Ring was OK, but it didn’t do much for me. Another one that is kinda scary just by the somber mood is The Mothman Prophecies with Richard Gere.
You need to check out every movie I mentioned.
I’d be curious if you like ‘em. Put your Blockbuster card to some use.
Also, if you have never seen Jaws, you need rectify that immediately. Watch it straight through, without interruption.

I tend to be a fan of some of the old Stephen King classics. Of course the Shining, but Misery will never let you see Kathy Bates in the same light again. Pet Cemetery isn’t too bad and Carrie does a good job as well. I have heard that Phantasm is a good one. Way to go with Shining as number one. My Favy.
