Um…Wow.
Marty Sampson is one of the worship leaders at Hillsong Church and a former leader for United. Let Love Rule is his debut solo album and it’s unbelievable. Expect “less church and more singer songwriter.” Check out “Landslide” and then you’ll just want to buy the album.

mmm… love good ol marty! based on the cover, he’s bound to be a hit.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Like what I hear. May have to grab a copy from the good ole digital music realm that is iTunes.
March 13th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Listening now…Thanks.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Just got done listening to the album. It’s pretty good. It reminds me a little of John Mayer’s early lyrics/style…though not as good in my opinion. It’s certainly not bad though…well, except the first song. I hope he continues though. It’s certainly a good start of a solo/songwriting kinda thing.
Anyways, thanks for the recommendation. Always looking to check out new music.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
It’s way more Josh Kelly meets Phil Wickham to me.
March 13th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Really? Some of the lines in there really reminded me of some of John Mayer’s from “Room For Squares.” Oh well.
March 13th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Contrary to your opinion Zackius…I think Marty is more like Chris Martin (lead singer of Coldplay) than the Mayer. The Mayer is way smoother and has a bit more pop compared to the Sampson. Owned.
March 13th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Hmmm…Don’t see the Chris Martin really. The thing the reminded me of “early” Mayer was some of the lyrics. Some are good, while some are super-cheesy…Especially the first song.
March 13th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
His EP reminds me way more of Dave’s Solo album (some devil)…ESPECIALLY “Heaven Sent” and “Landslide”…
March 13th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Seriously? I’ll have to listen again. I didn’t hear anything that remotely reminded me of Some Devil. I’ll listen again later tonight.
EDIT: OK, I listened to those two songs. I can MAYBE see a tiny Chris Martin resemblance, but I still don’t see Dave in there really. I also re-listened to Brave Souls (track #1). . . that one just screams early John Mayer to me, except way cheesier.
Again, I don’t think it’s a bad CD, just not awesome. Still, I’ll give it another listen beginning to end later on tonight or tomorrow.
But seriously, I don’t hear any Dave in there at all. I’m not saying that because I’m a Dave fan or anything, I just honestly don’t hear it. I promise though, I’ll re-listen just to be sure now that you pointed it out.

While deciding not to weigh in on the current discussion, I would like to offer the opinion that it is slightly presumptuous to pronounce your own “owned.” I would be a little more careful the next time Kristinius.
March 13th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
My belief is that you can add your own personal “owned” or “thats what she said” where it fits. Sorry if you felt I was being presumptuous. You were right you shouldn’t have weighed in here. Thanks for your invaluable opinion. Yours truly.
March 13th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
This discussion has gotten way out of hand. Trust me, this is a great CD. Also…sounds like Dave solo…My final words are as follows:
- No Mayer resemblance
- Sounds like Some Devil at parts
- This is great music from a seasoned writer.
March 13th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
He should stick to writing worship music for Hillsong…..
March 13th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I decided to break my silence to say that I can’t wait until you guys’ solo albums come out…I’m sure they’ll be way better.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Jordan:
I never said I could do better.
- Brave Souls sounds like John Mayer’s style and early lyrics. Vocally? No. Lyrically and stylistically? Yes.
- If by “sounds like ‘Some Devil,’” you mean that his voice is occasionally gravelly and contemplative, then I can kinda see that, but that’s about it.
- It’s a good first solo effort that is better than most freshman albums.
I enjoyed it just fine…just not as much as you.
March 13th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
All I’m saying is that:
That album is not produced if he hadn’t had the Hillsong connection/experience. He is an amazing worship leader/songwriter. IMO he’s one of the most influential worship leaders ever. I was listening to his solo cd a while back, and I was just not that impressed. Reuben Morgan’s solo stuff isn’t that great either.
But, I do hear some Chris Martin in there, and I don’t make the Mayer connection like Zack does.
My solo album debuts soon, I’m just waiting on some vocal/guitar talent, songwriting, and a little producing. It should be out by the early summer…..
March 14th, 2008 at 6:43 am
I just want to make sure I am clear:
I do not think he SOUNDS like John Mayer vocally. Some of the lyrics remind me of some of early John Mayer lyrics. Vocally - no. Lyrically - yes, in places.
Overall though, Jordan, you love it. I like it.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Kristin,
I hardly feel my opinion is invaluable, much less, invalidated by your own “owned” beliefs. I guess we can agree to disagree on the matter. I simply feel that the effect is lost when you have to point out your own success.
March 14th, 2008 at 8:41 am
I re-listened to brave souls and there is not even a hint of Mayer stylistically or lyrically in my opinion. I hear Josh Kelly.
Secondly, I disagree that the album wouldn’t be produced w.out Hillsong. Marty has been an influential indie artist in Australia since before United really hit. His career was really launched in like 2000 when his secular band (Able) one a nationaly televised battle of the bands on AMTV…
March 14th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Jordan,
Like Chris and Kristin, we’ll just have to agree to disagree, I suppose. Maybe it’s more Josh Kelly. I haven’t listened to him in forever and never really listened much in the first place. I’m sure you know JOsh Kelly’s music much better than I do, so I’ll defer to you on that one. Some of the lyrics just scream, “love notes to my jr. high sweetheart in study hall” to me. They just remind me of John Mayer’s earlier lyrics for some reason.
I think this discussion might have given you the impression I hated the album/EP. That’s not the case. It’s fine. I just wasn’t blown away.
Glad you like it though. It’s always fun to find a new album that just does it for you.
Speaking of that, it isn’t new really, but new to me. I’ve been listening to this 3-disc “Earth, Wind & Fire Set. http://www.amazon.com/Great-Earth-Wind-Fire/dp/B0000TAPHY
It’s amazing.
March 14th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Wow Zack,
Way to avert a problem. You begin with a consensus to disagree, throw in one last punch, and then completely end the melancholy white artist discussion by throwing in a retro, afro - Earth, Wind, and Fire. Nice.
March 14th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Thanks Chris. I’m always the peacekeeper, you know.
I would hate for a disagreement like this to get ugly among family and all.
As for the Earth, Wind & Fire plug, I was just contributing to the conversation. Jordan had suggested some music to his readers that he thinks is awesome. I merely suggested some music to his readers that is awesome. That’s all.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:09 am
I haven’t mentioned earth, wind, and fire on the blog because Chris and I were into that greatest hits album four years ago…I guess your just a bit behind on that one…Anyway, maybe that means in four years you’ll be able to appreciate Marty a little more…Maybe.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Well, I’ve had numerous Earth, Wind & Fire CD’s going back to high school. I just had never gotten this particular collection. So, you’ve got me there. Then again, given that songs are much much older, the fact that I hadn’t heard this particular collection isn’t really relevant. I mean, just because I picked up “1″ (Beatles) on the day it was released didn’t mean I hadn’t heard every track on there 5,000 before that.
Anyways, I’m honestly very happy you enjoyed the Marty Sampson CD so much. I’d say I agree with your musical taste around 90% of the time. For example, Phil Wickham’s latest CD that you recommend is awesome. This just happens to fall in that 10%.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:50 am
I’m actually sorry about even commenting on the Marty Samson CD. Josh Oswald invented a machine that took away my ability to critic music when I said that the DMB “Everyday” album was not very good or “sucks”.
March 14th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Shaun,
I totally agree that “Everyday” was not a great album, especially since, as a band, they have so much talent. It was basically Dave writing pop songs with a backing band. Some Devil is much better than Everyday. Anyways, Everyday doesn’t suck to me. Many of the songs are good live, but as a CD, it certainly isn’t as good as their earlier ones. Sucks? Not to me. Great? Nope.
Josh is in the hospital with the new baby and all, so go right ahead and critique some music.
March 14th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
would somebody call Dr. phil this family could use some help!
March 14th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
It’s OK, Tammie. Jordan just needs to have his hearing checked a little.
March 18th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
For the record, what I said was…
(Direct quote from my email archive)
Shaun,
If I had a machine that would take away someone’s ability to have a humble opinion, I would buy it and use it on you.
There are approximately ZERO DMB Albums that “suck†or “blowâ€. There are several albums that contain songs that are sub-standard.
We use these terms (suck and blow) to describe our Sunday Morning worship sometimes. Let the record show that no DMB song sucks or blows as hard as our musical styling’s do sometimes. Respect the sanctity of words people!
JMHO
About the Sampson Record, or at least what i can hear on Myspace…
Heaven Sent - It’s ok, but as a rule, I’m usually not drawn to music that has stuff in it…you know, stuff…not music really…kind of like Reason blew up in the studio and landed on the tracks. Also, the dropped snare beat on the upbeat on the first chorus…not so much.
Landslide - Again, too much stuff going on. If it takes a laptop to make it, it isn’t music. No offense. Lyrics are neat though.
Brave Souls - 50 bucks says those are programmed drums…not a fan. Overall has the best layering of all. Nice (albeit cheesy) guitar riffs…sounds like the Goo Goo Dolls to me. On the bridge, he sounds just like Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam.
Love always,
Oswald
